Dr. Bhaskar Gupta is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Specialist at University Hospital Southampton with over 20 years’ experience.​

I am Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreo-retinal disease and advanced cataract surgery. With over 20 years of international and UK clinical experience, I currently practise at University Hospital Southampton, managing complex retinal and cataract cases.

I have personally performed more than 20,000 cataract surgeries and over 2,000 vitrectomies, including complex retinal detachments, diabetic eye disease, macular disorders, and trauma-related conditions. My approach is meticulous, outcome-focused, and guided by the latest clinical evidence.

Alongside clinical work, I remain actively involved in research and medical education, holding a Doctorate in Medicine (Research) and contributing to over 60 peer-reviewed publications.

Training & Professional Background

  • My medical training began in India at B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, followed by specialist ophthalmology residency at the M. J. Institute of Ophthalmology, where I was awarded a Gold Medal.

  • I subsequently completed advanced specialist training in the UK, including posts at St. Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London, before undertaking higher specialist training as a Specialist Registrar under a National Training Number.

  • Advanced sub-specialty training in vitreo-retinal surgery was completed at University Hospital Southampton and Royal Berkshire Hospital, shaping my current clinical practice.

Research, Teaching & Professional Contribution

In addition to clinical work, I remain committed to academic ophthalmology. I hold a Doctorate in Medicine (Research) from Cranfield University and have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
